Whip

Animal Farm

The whip, a symbol of human oppression, was among the first objects destroyed after the Rebellion. The animals, in their initial act of liberation, threw the whips onto a rubbish fire, capering with joy as the instruments of their torment went up in flames. This destruction was meant to erase the hated reign of Mr. Jones and to mark the dawn of a new era of animal freedom.

But as Napoleon consolidated his power through the violent expulsion of Snowball and the terror of his dogs, the whip reappeared. When Napoleon emerged from the farmhouse walking on his hind legs, he carried a whip in his trotter. The object that had been consigned to the fire now rested in the trotter of the pig who had become the new master, signaling that the Revolution had begun to consume its own.

Soon, the whip became a standard accessory for all pigs supervising the farm. Alongside the acquisition of wireless sets, telephones, and human clothes, the whip completed the pigs' transformation into the very oppressors they had overthrown. The animals, who had once celebrated the burning of the whips, now worked under the gaze of pigs carrying them, and the line between the pigs and the humans they had expelled became indistinguishable.
